An Emulated PV Source Based on an Unilluminated Solar Panel and DC Power Supply

Abstract: This paper provides a review on various PV simulator technologies as well as presents a novel equivalent photovoltaic (PV) source that was constructed by using un-illuminated solar panels and a DC power supply that operates in current source mode. The constructed PV source was used for testing photovoltaic converters and various maximum power point tracking (MPPT) algorithms required for capturing the maximum possible output power. The mathematical model and electrical characteristics of the constructed PV sou… Show more

“…In the concrete case of the photovoltaic cell the analytical model opens the doors for the detailed description in function of the external variables, which for all effects determine the general forms of the characteristic curves. However, to make modeling effective, it will be the model's intrinsic parameters which will more or less shape the link to the experimental data [18]. Molding is particularly critical at three points of operation.…”

“…In [27] the authors optimize the MPPT with a model of a photovoltaic panel with two diodes in which the solution is implemented by Pattern Search Techniques. A PV source that was made by utilizing un-illuminated solar panels and a DC power supply that functions in current source mode is proposed in [18]. The authors in [28] address a simple genetic algorithm (GA)-based MPPT method and then compare the experimental and theoretical results with conventional methods.…”

“…A further method is based on the use of an analog amplification technique that allows to independently amplify the low current and voltage values typical of a photodiode operating in the photovoltaic mode so as to make them coincide with those of a standard photovoltaic module [8,9]. Since this type of emulator is made entirely with analog components, it has a high bandwidth, which allows using this circuit to test photovoltaic inverters with maximum power point tracker (MPPT) algorithms operating at high frequency [10][11][12]. On the other hand, the main disadvantage of this circuit is the high power dissipation that involves the use of heat sinks with a large surface area.…”

“…Another method builds an equivalent photovoltaic source using an unlighted photovoltaic panel and a DC current power supply [10]. However, this approach requires the use of an actual PV panel that must be changed if it is necessary to emulate a different panel; also, the temperature effect is not easily simulated.…”

“…With an actual PV array on site, it is necessary to alter the series/parallel combination of PV modules for testing different rated PV power conditioning systems. Hence a PV simulator is required to validate the solar power conditioning system at the laboratory level itself before any actual site trials [1,2]. A PV-simulator system is a DC power source in which the current-voltage (I-V) characteristics of different PV arrays can be programmed so that the operation of the solar power conditioning system can be validated.…”
