An empirically sound telemedicine taxonomy – applying the CAFE methodology

Abstract: Aim Because the field of information systems (IS) research is vast and diverse, structuring it is a necessary precondition for any further analysis of artefacts. To structure research fields, taxonomies are a useful tool. Approaches aiming to develop sound taxonomies exist, but they do not focus on empirical development. We aimed to close this gap by providing the CAFE methodology, which is based on quantitative content analysis. Subject and methods Existi… Show more

“…The results of the search showed that the use of digital health services can be extensive and can be used for many different purposes and in different population groups. The results were analyzed according to the methodology given by Harst et al [ 41 ], which classifies interventions into 5 clusters, as discussed earlier. In this Results section, the purpose of using digital services is roughly categorized according to the clusters presented in the framework.…”

“…“Device and use” was chosen as the primary theme based on the objective and main research question of this scoping review. The analysis was performed deductively using the framework developed by Harst et al [ 41 ]. The framework classifies interventions into 5 clusters: telemonitoring, teleconsultation, telediagnosis, teleambulance/tele-emergency, and digital self-management [ 41 ].…”

“…A matrix was developed as the basis for data extraction. The studies were categorized by (1) study type (feasibility study, noncontrolled trial, controlled trial, and randomized controlled trial [RCT]), (2) medical purpose (first letter of International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems, 10th revision [ICD-10] classification [ 20 ]), and (3) application type based on the taxonomy developed by Harst et al [ 21 , 22 ]. This taxonomy was chosen because of its development based on empirical data, which allows its use in quantifying and statistically analyzing the characteristics of telemedicine applications.…”
