An Empirical Test of Environmental Kuznets Curve for Water Pollution

Abstract: The Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) on water pollution was investigated with both semiparametric and parametric models using watershed level data for the state of Louisiana, USA. The parametric model indicated the turning points within the range $10241–$12993, $6636–$13877, and $6467–$12758 for nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and dissolved oxygen (DO), respectively. However, only the parameters associated with N EKC were found to be significant. Model specification tests rejected parametric models in favor of … Show more

“…As select examples, Deacon and Norman [26], and Merlevede et al [27], conducted EKC studies relating to air pollution. Paudel et al [28] examined water pollution, Barbier [29] and Culas [30] examined deforestation, and Rupasingha et al [31] examined hazardous waste and toxins. While less common than cross-national studies, a number of EKC studies have been conducted for spatial data (e.g., counties, states or regions) within a single country.…”

“…Traditionally, the EKC literature has examined the relationship between income and pollution (Dinda 2004;Dinda et al 2000;Dasgupta et al 2002;Grossman and Krueger 1995;Khanna 2002;Paudel et al 2005;Shafik 1994;Unruh and Moomaw 1998). Most EKC research involves regression models with air and/or water quality measures as dependent variables and per capita income, population density, and other economic and demographic variables as independent variables.…”

“…Yet, Grossman and Krueger (1993) fi nd a monotonically declining relationship between particulate concentration and income. The water quality sector has produced similarly inconclusive evidence (Paudel et al, 2005). In general, and as we discuss below, empirical fi ndings of EKCs depend heavily on the model's functional form and selected variables (Harbaugh et al, 2002).…”

“…environmental quality as a function of polynomials of per capita GDP of degree one to three and other explanatory variables that control for differences in time and cross-section) are not driven by a particular economic model, and little can be said about the correct specifi cation of the model. Instead, its robustness is tested using a range of specifi cations and examining how these specifi cations change the pattern and magnitude of the estimated parameter coeffi cients (Harbaugh et al, 2002;Paudel et al, 2005).…”
