An empirical study on consumer acceptance of farmed fish fed on insect meals: the Italian case

Abstract: Aquaculture is assuming ever more importance in diminishing the pressure on wild stocks in the seas and to satisfy the demand of fish worldwide. Prices of feed used in farming fish are increasing, due the rise in demand. Research on sustainable sources of feed was recently intensified and insects as meal to substitute soybean and fish meals and fish oils seems a promising field. In particular only very few papers have explored consumer interest in fish feed. The objective of this study is to explore the attitu… Show more

“…However, today, despite the prominent thinking about the potential key role of insect meal in protein production in terms of constant quantities, high quality, the stability of supply and price [18], and price reduction [37], the current price of insect meal is still not competitive with other protein sources [38]. Additionally, given the current cost structure of the aquaculture farm, as reported above, the most urgent challenge for the aquaculture sector is the cost of FM and fish oil.…”

“…How does the composition of the diet influence the quality and nutritional value of the edible tissues (Fry et al 2016;Sprague et al 2016)? How do consumers view the use of traditional versus alternative ingredients (Mancuso et al 2016;Popoff et al 2017;Shepherd et al 2017), raw materials derived from genetically modified organisms (Lucht 2015), and so on? Nutritionists are understandably preoccupied with the nutritional aspects of feed formulation, but these other questions also merit their attention.…”

“…Feed vs Food -Some issues of neophobia exist when consumers are faced with the direct insect consumption (insects as food) (Sogari et al 2019a). However, they responded positively to the question if they would eat meat products from livestock fed insect meals (insects as feed), when properly informed about current animal feed issues (Verbeke et al 2015;Mancuso et al 2016;Ferrer Llagostera et al 2019;Macombe et al 2019;Sogari et al 2019b). Moreover, in this case, insect-based feeds and animal food from livestock fed with them are considered to have a better nutritional value and to be more sustainable than the conventional feed/food counterparts (Verbeke et al 2015;Ferrer Llagostera et al 2019).…”
