Color is an essential visual element that has a significant impact on the formation of a city's image and people's perceptions. Quantitative analysis of color in urban environments is a complex process that has been difficult to implement in the past. However, with recent rapid advances in Machine Learning, it has become possible to analyze city colors using photos shared by tourists. This study selected Dali City, a popular tourist destination in China, as a case study. Photos of Dali City shared by tourists were collected, and a method to measure large-scale city colors was explored by combining machine learning techniques. Specifically, the DeepLabv3+ model was first applied to perform a semantic segmentation of tourist sharing photos based on the ADE20k dataset, thereby separating artificial elements in the photos. Next, the K-means clustering algorithm was used to extract colors from the artificial elements in Dali City, and an adjacency matrix was constructed to analyze the correlations between the dominant colors. The research results indicate that the main color of the artificial elements in Dali City has the highest percentage of orange-grey. Furthermore, gray tones are often used in combination with other colors. The results indicated that local ethnic and Buddhist cultures influence the color characteristics of artificial elements in Dali City. This research provides a new method of color analysis, and the results not only help Dali City to shape an urban color image that meets the expectations of tourists but also provide reference materials for future urban color planning in Dali City.

The color–area ratio in ethnic minority areas is one way to perceive cultural elements visually. The openness of spaces, sense of rhythm, and richness of color affect people’s emotions and induce different psychological perceptions. Despite many ethnic minority areas being more colorful than the main traits of Han, there is no systematic quantitative study for the color elements in ethnic minority areas’ landscapes, not to mention the research on the color–area ratio, main and auxiliary colors and embellishments, and layouts. Therefore, this paper studies the color–area ratio of Xiangcheng County in the Tibetan area of Ganzi Prefecture in Sichuan Province. Colors are extracted and quantitatively analyzed from six different aspects using the semantic differential (SD) method and color quantitative analysis method. In this way, low-scored (B group) and high-scored (A group) color landscape samples were extracted from the landscape image library and quantitatively analyzed by ColorImpact V4.1.2. The results show that the ethnic minority group’s color layout is characterized by richer colors and stronger contrasts than the Han group. This paper contributes to academic scholarship regarding color culture in ethnic minority areas. It also provides theoretical support for preserving ethnic minority groups’ cultural heritage and practical insights into color planning for urban and landscape designs.

Integrated Eye-Tracking Response Surface Analysis to Optimize the Design of Garden Landscapes

Gardens not only provide people with a place for leisure and relaxation, they also contribute to improving urban ecological environments and promoting social interactions and cohesion. Additionally, from a psychological perspective, gardens play a role in alleviating stress, enhancing happiness, and improving the quality of life. Current research on gardens has primarily employed methods such as questionnaire surveys, environmental psychology analyses, and eye-tracking analyses; however, comprehensive studies on the relationships between multiple factors and levels in garden designs are lacking. Here, we propose a response surface analysis approach based on eye-tracking technology for the design and optimization of gardens. Firstly, the impacts of different garden elements on visitors’ psychology and fixation counts were analyzed using environmental psychology and eye-tracking analyses. Subsequently, the optimal range of each garden feature was determined through single-factor experiments, followed by response surface analysis to obtain the optimal value for each element. The results revealed that changes in garden elements such as the greenery ratio, number of buildings, and water saturation significantly affected visitors’ psychology. The greenery ratio had a greater impact than the number of buildings, which in turn had a greater impact than water saturation. This study is the first to analyze the relationships between multiple garden elements. A strong relationship was found between the greenery ratio and the number of buildings, as well as between the number of buildings and water saturation, while the relationship between the greenery ratio and water saturation was weaker. This approach can not only optimize garden designs but can also be widely applied in fields such as urban planning and public space transformation to enhance visitors’ comfort and satisfaction with the environment and promote sustainable urban development.
