“…At both hospitals, the WoWs were placed beside the door of the patient room in the corridor. The WoWs were used as decentralized medication rooms, which could reduce nurses' walking distance (Xuan et al, 2019). In this study, the nurses were asked to mark the most efficient place for the WoWs according to their working experience.…”

“…A few studies included older community-dwellers for the collection of viewpoints from different perspectives. Caregivers, family members, and the managements were also frequently involved as supplementary data sources ( Hsieh et al, 2012b ; Xuan et al, 2019 , 2020 ). Older adults with advanced dementia or severe mental illness were commonly excluded, due to challenges in collecting their QoL-related data directly from them ( Chang, 2013 ; Kasai et al, 2015 ; Komatsu et al, 2007 ; Tsai & Tsai, 2008 ).…”

“…In some clinical departments, such as neurosurgery, a patient’s condition could be serious and change rapidly, and emergency rescue stretchers should be provided and conveniently located close to the patient’s room. As one of the most important spaces, workstation on wheels (WoWs) have been extensively used in nursing units (Xuan et al, 2019). However, the WoWs were not designed for different clinical departments according to their special requirements.…”

“…In short, the specialty-focused development in nursing services was conducive to increasing nurse engagement and improving patient care (Manning & Jones, 2021). However, the majority of studies related to nursing units have focused on general medical–surgical nursing units and combined the data from all departments without differentiating among clinical specialties (Hadi et al, 2016; Kalisch et al, 2013; Trzpuc & Martin, 2010; Xuan et al, 2019). In response to this gap in the body of knowledge, this study focused on specialized nursing requirements and how nursing unit design could support the specialty-focused nursing work of different departments to improve the efficiency of nursing care, which is one of the key factors that constitutes healthcare quality (Committee on Quality Health Care in America IoM, 2001), could increase the time nurses spent on direct patient care and interaction with patients and their family members (Shepley, 2002), improve medical outcomes (R.W.…”
