An Emerging Grounded Theory in South Africa with Matthew 25:31-46 as Sermon Text

Abstract: Since 2009, I am researching sermons on Matthew 25:31-46 by preachers of the Uniting Reformed Church and the Dutch Reformed Church (Nederduitse Gereformeerde Kerk). The sermons are collected in South Africa's eight provinces. This is an empirical-homiletic study with a grounded theory methodology. The open coding and selective coding cycles are already completed. This article presents the results of the last cycle, namely theoretical coding. The theory for practice describes the concepts which emerged from the… Show more

Accordingly, in Pieterse's work, a homiletic interest has been inextricably connected to the field of diaconia to develop a practical-theological theory of action for a post-apartheid South African society still suffering severely under conditions of endemic poverty (see Pieterse 2004Pieterse :93-121, 2011a.…”

“…In South African practical-theological scholarship in the post-apartheid era, the work of Hendrik Pieterse deserves special appreciation for the way in which he has developed, through on-going research over a prolonged period of time, a theoretical perspective on the role that the Christian church could play through its preaching to promote diaconal practices of social change in South Africa's many poor communities (Pieterse 2001(Pieterse , 2002(Pieterse , 2004(Pieterse , 2011a(Pieterse , 2011b(Pieterse , 2012(Pieterse , 2013a(Pieterse , 2013b.…”

“…One of the main reasons the topic of reconciliation was discovered was because of the fact that, during one of the interviews, the interviewer noticed the repeated mention of the word 'restores' or 'restored' by the co-researchers which was also confirmed in the coding process (cf. Pieterse 2010;2012;2013a;2013b). The word 'restores' and its related forms were mentioned 20 times during this and other interviews.…”

“…A process of inductive coding was used in order to identify the core themes recurring in these interviews. In this regard, the work of Pieterse (2010;2012;2013a;2013b) in homiletics and Wepener (2013; cf. also Wepener & Pieterse 2016) in liturgical studies guided the process.…”
