“…A few SP-and CGRP-LI nerve fibers have also been identified in the rat in other laboratories [12][13][14][15]. Confirming their presence in the rat, we found them to be much more abundant than what had been reported [16], Moreover, we were able to demon strate synaptic contacts between the SP-or CGRP-LI nerve fibers and the corticotropes and somatotropes in the dog [17,18], Synapses have also been found by us in Prof. Gong Ju …”

“…They were mainly distributed among the gland cells and in close relationship to the gland cells rather than to the blood vessels (Ju & Liu 1989e,c). Of pivotal importance are our discoveries of synaptic contacts with the gland cells in the anterior pituitary of the dog 0u & Zhang 1990& Zhang , 1992; this has demonstrated the motor nature of the nerve fibers and strongly suggests a direct neural regulation of the anterior pituitary. This has been further confirmed by the response of the nerve fibers to hormone manipulations.…”

“…It has been reported in our previous studies and also by other laboratories that there are peptidergic nerve fibers in the anterior pituitary of several mammalian species, including the rat (Rosenfeld et al 1983, Westlund et al 1983, Skofitsch & Jacobowitz 1985, Tschopp et al 1985, Liu &Ju 1988, Mikkelsen et al 1989, Gon et al 1990, Ju & Liu 1989a, Ju & Zhang 1990, Ju et al 1991. They have been found to be in close contact with the gland cells (Ju & Liu 19896,c), even to make synaptic contacts with them (Ju & Zhang 1990. Furthermore, Ju et al (1994) found that 4 days after adrenalectomy an increase in the number of calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP)-like immuno¬ reactive (LI) nerve fibers in the anterior pituitary was induced.…”

“…In addition, SP-positive immunoreactive nerve fibers have been identified in the anterior pituitary of monkeys (Ju and Liu, 1989), dogs (Ju and Liu, 1990;Ju and Zhang, 1990), rats (Larsen, 1992;Ju and Liu, 1993), and humans (Liu, 2004), in close contact with secretory cells. The latter observation has led researchers to believe that neurokinins may also act directly on the pituitary gland via a neurologic mechanism, as well as by influencing hypothalamic-releasing hormones.…”
