“…In the reticular meshwork of the rat spleen, very minute elastic fibers could be clearly identified in this study. Elastic fibers have been detected previously by electron microscopy in the trabeculae of the rat spleen (Pictet et al, 1969), but not in the red and white pulp, except in Saito's study (1977).…”

“…In fact, reticular fibers in both red and white pulp contain lamina-densalike material, collagenous fibrils, microfibrils, elastic fibers, and unmyelinated nerve fibers with Schwann cells; they lack only the smooth muscle cells. Several studies found that in the spleens of monkey (Galindo and Freeman, 1963), rat (Pictet et al, 1969), rabbit (Burke and Simon 19701, guinea pig (Janout and Weiss, 19721, human (Blue and Weiss, 1981b), and dog (Weiss et al, 1985), reticular fibers contained collagen fibers as the only fibrous components. The existence of elastic fibers in the reticular fibers of the rat spleen was reported by Saito (1977).…”

“…Whatever the secretion manner of the reticular cells may be, these are fibroblastic cells, and SIMON andPICTET (1964), MOORE et al (1964) and PICTET et al (1969) have called the splenic reticular cells "fibroblasts" because of their cytological similarities to the usual fibroblasts. However, they are somewhat different from typical fibroblasts in the following aspects; (1) reticular cells are so closely and limitedly associated with strands of the extracellular reticulum, (2) in the limited areas they have basal lamina-like materials which are not observed around fibroblasts, (3) bundles of fine filaments are abundant throughout the cytoplasm and among these bundles, dense bodies, and beneath the plasma membranes, hemidesmosomes are prominent.…”

“…PICTET et al (1969) proposed a view that they might be the cellular skeleton and are found in all cells which seem required to function as a supporting framework.…”
