An Electrochemical Quartz Crystal Microbalance Study on Electrodeposition of Aluminum and Aluminum-Manganese Alloys

Abstract: The electrodeposition process of aluminum and aluminum-manganese alloys was studied in situ, by using an electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance, EQCM, with damping monitoring, in AlCl 3 based ionic liquids. Cyclic voltammetry, potentiostatic and galvanostatic deposition were performed at different temperatures, from 25 • C up to 100 • C. The morphology of the deposits was investigated by SEM and AFM, and their composition by EDX. The stoichiometry of the alloys was calculated from the EQCM data, based on … Show more

“…This response continues until the selected vertex potential of −0.5 V. The current signal then shows a very characteristic, linear response in the anodic potential scan direction from −0.5 V to just over +0.4 V, where electrochemical deposition of Al occurs at all potentials negative of −0.15 V and electrochemical dissolution of Al takes place at all potentials positive of −0.15 V. This type of linear voltammetric behavior has been reported previously for similar chloroaluminate liquids. 20,24,34,35,41,42,54,55 Finally, at +0.5 V, the dissolution current peaks and then falls abruptly as it goes to +0.6 V (the second switching potential), indicating that the deposited Al has been removed.…”

“…To apply Sauerbrey work, certain conditions should be kept in mind regarding the deposited film that it is indeed smooth and rigid [136]. Additionally, it is very important to separate the reason for frequency shift either from the viscoelasticity of the solution or from the mass change of quartz resonator.…”
