An Electrochemical Method for the Production of Graphite Oxide

Abstract: We report on the development of a technique for the rapid production of exfoliated graphite oxide, using an electrochemical oxidation and exfoliation method. Vitreous carbon foam (VCF) sheets were utilised as the anode in an electrolytic cell. VCF anodes were oxidized under a maximum applied electric field of 60V and a current of 2A in NaOH electrolyte solutions. The resulting solids, collected after separation of the electrolyte, were analysed using ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and scan… Show more

“…Secondly, the method is relatively simple such that a scale-up to industrial production levels could be comparatively straightforward. Moreover, thirdly, hazardous chemicals and the lack of necessity for temperature control and makes the electrochemical production of GO more environmentally friendly [126,148,150,167].…”

“…There are several works that suggest using alkaline media to exfoliate graphite anodes, with the product being predominantly graphite oxide. Parker et al 69 applied +60 V between a graphite foil anode and a steel rod cathode in 1 M NaOH solution. Chang et al 70 used standard aqueous ammonium hydroxide solution and applied +10 V for ca.…”

“…Therefore, scientists are pursuing the development of a wide variety of technologies for synthesizing high-quality low-cost graphene in large quantities. Graphite oxide or aggregated graphene oxide is an oxygenated graphene lattice with the functional groups on their basal planes and edges and is mostly used as a precursor in the production of graphene [3][4]. Although Hummers' or Improved Hummers' method is widely used to synthesize GO sheets, because of the usage of strong acids and oxidizing mixtures, it may cause impurities/ defects in the final products [5].…”
