An eight-channel detector for an /sup 192/Ir brachytherapy source-based computed tomography scanner

Abstract: Absfracf-Bracliytlierapy (BT) is a well-established cancer treatment modality thal requires accurate localization of source holders with respect to the tunior and nearby critical structures. Conipiited tomography (CT) is ideal Sir imaging the Source holders. In this paper, we describe a solid-state eight-channel detector designed for a fourth-generation CT scanner that uses a higli-dose-rate BT source to provide the photons needed to form an image. The detector conlprises eight 0.8 x 0.275 X 1.0 cm' CdW04 scin… Show more

“…2. The components of these detector boards have been described earlier 27 and the bond- ing process of the eight-element CdWO 4 crystal array has been discussed. 24 Briefly, eight 2.75ϫ 8 ϫ 10 mm 3 CdWO 4 crystals are bonded together in white gelcoat ͑Ashland Chemical Type 1 polyester gelcoat͒, commonly used as the outer coat for fiberglass boats.…”

“…Therefore, the detector electronics were designed using discrete components. The electronics for a single detector channel have been described earlier, 27 and for this work printed circuit boards each containing eightdetector channels have been fabricated. The electronics of a single detector channel are shown in Fig.…”

“…As seen in this figure, the receptor consists of ten separate blocks of bonded eightelement CdWO 4 arrays. The components of these blocks have been described earlier [20][21][22] and the bonding process of the eight-element CdWO 4 crystal array discussed in detail. 23 Briefly, each block, consisting of eight 0.275ϫ 0.8 ϫ 1.0 cm 3 CdWO 4 crystals ͑Rexon Components Inc., Beachwood, OH͒, is constructed by bonding the crystals in white gelcoat ͑Ashland chemical type 1 polyester gelcoat͒ commonly used as the outer coat for fiberglass boats.…”

“…The prototype hardware used to read the signal from the scintillator-photodiode system in continuous radiation is similar to that described in an earlier work. 31 Briefly, for the Co 60 beam, the photo-current (I p ) is integrated on a 1 nano-Farad capacitor for a specified period of time (⌬T), amplified (gainϭ47) and digitized using 16-bit analog-to-digital ͑A-to-D͒ converter ͑PCI6034E, National Instruments, Austin, TX͒. Timing control signals are derived from an independent clock circuit ͑in-house͒ and by using Labview ͑National Instruments, Austin, TX͒ software running on a PC.…”
