This review discusses the application of chromatographic techniques (GC, HPLC and Py-GC) for the characterisation of proteinaceous materials in artistic paintings. The focus is on the various analytical steps that are needed to determine these natural materials in paint samples, from sampling and sample pre-treatment, including various methods of hydrolysis and derivatisation for GC and HPLC, to approaches for data evaluation.

Moreover, ions such as Cl − present in the mortar, sand or in the bricks, can react with the basic carbonate to form copper hydroxychlorides ((Cu 2 Cl(OH) 3 ) atacamite, clinoatacamite, paratacamite botallackite) [119,121,123,[126][127][128] and the copper chloride nantokite [103]. This review is to be considered part of the development of the MEMORI dosimeter, to evaluate the impact of climate (relative humidity, temperature, illumination, etc., including volatile organic compounds) on moveable objects. In the framework of the MEMORI project, Ghent University was given the task to assess pigment degradation upon acetic acid exposure, and to collect information on pigments' stability. Moreover, to obtain a wider knowledge on the stability of common pigments, the effect of a variety of parameters was reviewed from literature. Discolouration and degradation of pigments significantly alter the legibility of polychrome works of art, so that the development of monitoring methods to ensure the preservation of cultural heritage objects is of primary importance.

The method of Thermally assisted Hydrolysis and Methylation (THM) was applied to the analysis of plant gums that can be found in artistic and archaeological objects. The main products obtained by THM of gums arabic, cherry, tragacanth, ghatti and karaya are permethylated and partially methylated 3-deoxyaldonic acids, characteristic products obtained from alkaline hydrolysis of monosaccharides.These markers allowed only a preliminary distinction between the different gums because they are not representative of the entire monosaccharides profile. As classification on the basis of sugars quantification is impossible, multivariate data analysis was employed, using the peak areas of THM products as variables. Calculations were performed on several different sets of data, enhancing the capability of the method to differentiate gums, also when submitted to accelerated ageing treatments. A case study on samples coming from ancient Egyptian cartonnage funerary masks is presented.
