An Efficient Procedure for Acetalization of Carbonyl Compounds with P2O5/SiO2.

Abstract: P2O5 as dehydrating reagent can be used for the acetalization of carbonyl compounds. The reaction is very fast and proceeds within 1-2 minutes. -(MIRJALILI*, B. F.; ZOLFIGOL, M. “…This reusable catalyst is safe, inexpensive, easy to handle, and environmentally benign, presents fewer disposal problems and is stable in reaction media. Sodium hydrogen sulfate (NaHSO 4 .H 2 O) has been demonstrated to be an efficient catalyst for several important reactions such as synthesis of acyl-diazenes, 8 Friedel-Crafts reactions of carbonyl compounds with heteroaromatic compounds in water 9 and deprotection of acetals. 10 In continuation of our investigation of heterogeneous environmentally friendly catalysts, 11,12 in this paper, we report an efficient method for the preparation of amidomethyl naphthols using sodium hydrogen sulfate (Scheme 1).…”

“…Acetals are prepared by the condensation of carbonyl compounds with alcohols or diols in the presence of silicabound sulfuric acid [5], P 2 O 5 /SiO 2 [6], tetrabutylammonium tribromide [7], polymer bound metal complexes [8], silica gelsupported metallic sulfates [9], DDQ [10], NBS [11], lithium triflate [12], iodine [13], titanium cation-exchange montmorillonite [14], ruthenium(III)chloride [15], SO 3 [17], and functional ionic liquids possessing two adjacent acid sites [18]. The use of heterogeneous solid catalysts in the organic synthesis and industrial manufacture of chemicals is interesting and important, since they provide green alternatives to homogeneous catalysts.…”
