An Efficient Parametric Linear Programming Solver and Application to Polyhedral Projection

Abstract: Polyhedral projection is a main operation of the polyhedron abstract domain. It can be computed via parametric linear programming (PLP), which is more efficient than the classic Fourier-Motzkin elimination method. In prior work, PLP was done in arbitrary precision rational arithmetic. In this paper, we present an approach where most of the computation is performed in floating-point arithmetic, then exact rational results are reconstructed. We also propose a workaround for a difficulty that plagued previous attem… Show more

“…It can be shown that the region of the ( 1 , … , k ) associated to a given optimum X * is a convex polyhedron (for C 0 , a convex polyhedral cone), and that these regions form a quasi-partition of the space of parameters (two regions may overlap at their boundary, but not in their interior). 14,19,27 The output of the parametric linear programming solver is this quasi-partition, 11 There exists another, dual, kind of parametric linear programming where the parameters are in the right-hand side B. We do not consider it here.…”

“…We shall leave out here how polyhedral computations such as projection and convex hull can be reduced to parametric linear programming—this is covered in the literature 19,27 —and focus on solving the parametric linear programs.…”

“…The methods for doing so rely on lexicographic orderings or perturbations on the objective and/or constant term, or pivoting rules [20]. We have recently proposed a working solution to degeneracy [31] but there is still room for improvement.…”
