An Efficient Metric for Physical-layer Jammer Detection in Internet of Things Networks

Abstract: An active jammer could severely degrade the communication quality for wireless networks. Since all wireless nodes openly access the shared media, the harsh effects are exaggerated by retransmission attempts of affected devices. Fast and precise detection of the jammer is of vital importance for heterogeneous wireless environments such as the Internet of things (IoT). It could activate a series of corrective countermeasures to ensure the robust operation of the network. In this paper, we propose a local, straig… Show more

“…In [35], the authors located the jammed nodes in broadcast networks by developing an algorithm named the number of jammed slots (NJS), which collects the MAC-layer statuses of the jammed nodes at the software level. The NJS increases the number of jammed slots in each node if the node is receiving a meaningless signal from an illegitimate wireless device.…”

“…Security challenges in WSN include jamming attacks, where the jammer transmits a signal towards the target channel, intends to decrease the Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR); increases Bit Error Rate (BER), and decreases the Packet Delivery Ratio (PDR) which cause preventing the node from communicating with its neighbors [14,15]. Moreover, by emitting a signal with high power that is considered noise on the receiver side, nodes within the jamming area or near the noise source may not assign themselves to the available channel due to the jamming signal.…”

“…• Comprehensive jammer detection. Physical-layer jammers can be reactive and proactive 1 . As compared to our previous work [1] that uses witness nodes to detect reactive jammers, our new NJS algorithm can efficiently and accurately detect both reactive and proactive jammers.…”
