An Effective Noise Adaptive Median Filter for Removing High Density Impulse Noises in Color Images

Abstract: Images are normally degraded by some form of impulse noises during the acquisition, transmission and storage in the physical media. Most of the real time applications usually require bright and clear images, hence distorted or degraded images need to be processed to enhance easy identification of image details and further works on the image. In this paper we have analyzed and tested the number of existing median filtering algorithms and their limitations. As a result we have proposed a new effective noise adap… Show more

“…Besides that, the PA image quality may be also affected by noise during data acquisition. Generally, images may be degraded by some form of impulse noise that mostly caused during the process of image acquisition, transmission through communication media and storage in the physical devices 22 . In this study, noise that degrade the PA-images may be received during data acquisition and produced by burning effect caused by high intensity laser modulation.…”

“…While a standard median filter [4,5] can denoise effectively at low noise densities, it shows poor performance at high noise densities. Some improved versions of the standard median filters have been made by giving more weights to certain selected pixels in neighbourhood such as weighted median filter [6][7][8][9][10] and centre weighted median filter [11][12][13][14], as well as adaptive median filters [15,16] the neighbourhood sizes of which vary adaptively with the noise densities. However, these filters deal with all pixels uniformly without protecting noise-free pixels.…”
