An effective CFD approach for marine-vehicle maneuvering simulation based on the hybrid reference frames method

Abstract: a b s t r a c tThe computational efficiency of CFD on maneuverability simulation poses a great difficulty resulting in its restricted applications. A hybrid reference frames method is established that combines the rotating reference frame method and an added momentum source method. The computational domain is separated into two parts under the rotating reference frame and the inertial frame respectively. A single mesh is needed for all conditions of a testing model such as different rotating arm radius, pitch … Show more

“…With such an approach, it is possible to perform steady CFD computations which make it cost effective compared to unsteady computations. Also other approaches are used, such as a hybrid reference frame method of Wu et al [39], but those do not seem to be widely adopted in the CFD community yet.…”

“…In addition, Pan et al(2012) proposed an approach for simulating the small drift motion and the harmonic motion of the same submarine with full appendage using the unsteady RANS-based simulation and the dynamic mesh technique. To solve the rotational motion by CFD method, Wu et al(2015) employed the hybrid reference frames method to model the circular motion of the DARPA SUBOFF submarine. These researches show that the results of the RANS-based simulation are in good agreement with the experimental data.…”

“…The speed range for most AUVs ranges from 3 to 5 kn; therefore, the first two speeds were used for appendage optimization for subsequent chapters, and the last three speeds were used to verify the accuracy of the calculation method. Works by Wu [10] and Dantas and Barros [11], and our previous investigation [6,12] were referred to conducted the validation procedure. As shown in Fig.…”
