An effective approach to fabrication of antifouling ultrafiltration membrane based on zwitterionic polyimide

Abstract: In this study, a new kind of membrane material, an aromatic zwitterionic polyimide (PI) copolymer, was synthesized through a one-pot polymerization reaction by precise variation of the molar ratios of different monomers with specific groups. The zwitterionic PI ultrafiltration (UF) membrane was prepared through an immersion precipitation phase inversion method and thoroughly characterized by scanning electron microscopy, water contact angle measurement, protein adsorption measurement, and UF experiment. The zw… Show more

“…where C p and C f denote the concentration of the permeation and the feed, respectively. Then, the membrane was washed by distilled water for 20 min and the BSA solution was transformed to pure water to measure for another 1 h. For better assessment of the antifouling ability of the membranes, many parameters, such as flux recovery ratio (FRR), total fouling ratio (R t ), reversible fouling ratio (R r ), and irreversible fouling ratio (R ir ), were used as follows: 31 FRRð%Þ ¼ J w;2 J w;1 Â 100 ð5Þ…”

“…Peaks corresponding to PSF are seen here. Apart from these peaks, three more new peaks appeared at 3630 cm −1 , 3421 cm −1 and 1669 cm −1 corresponding to N−H, O−H and NH 3 + CO 2 − stretching [29] . Thus, the FT‐IR spectrum confirmed the formation of ionic structure (zwitter ionic structure) during the simultaneous grafting of CEA and CAA in the presence of AlCl 3 catalyst.…”

“…1 Moreover, they are characterized by low dielectric constants, low thermal expansion, light weight, good flexibility, facile preparation of films, and high radiation resistance. 2 Accordingly, they have been widely utilized in the electric, 3 photonics, 4,5 electro-optical, 6 gas and chemical separation membrane, [7][8][9] proton exchange membranes, 10 porous films, 11 and aerospace industries. 12 However, it is well known that wholly aromatic PIs are insoluble in most organic solvents due to the rigidity of their backbone and formation of a charge transfer complex between the dianhydride and diamine (DA) groups which greatly limits their application.…”
