An EEG-based brain computer interface for rehabilitation and restoration of hand control following stroke using ipsilateral cortical physiology

Abstract: The loss of motor control severely impedes activities of daily life. Brain computer interfaces (BCIs) offer new possibilities to treat nervous system injuries, but conventional BCIs use signals from primary motor cortex, the same sites most likely damaged in a stroke causing paralysis. Recent studies found distinct cortical physiology associated with contralesional limb movements in regions distinct from primary motor cortex. To capitalize on these findings, we designed and implemented a BCI that localizes and… Show more

“…This type of EEG also had been use by other researcher because it is easy to use, very convenient and the price is reasonable. Emotiv EEG Neuroheadset has 14-channel and the position of electrode is AF3, F7, F3, FC5, T7, P7, O1, O2, P8, T8, FC6, F4, F8, and AF4 with two of them as references [6]. The position of these electrodes follows the International 10-20 system electrode placement.…”

“…This multi-channel headset with sampling rate 128 Hz are bandpass filter 0.2 -45Hz, digital notch filters, and transmits the data wirelessly to the computer. The recording will be performing using TestBench software [6]. The EEG recording will be kept and analyzed in the same computer to ensure consistency in the analysis.…”

“…Currently, there are many BCI applications in different areas such as computer cursor control [23], remote control [24], biometric authentication [25], and emotion prediction [26]. Most remarkably, BCIs were already applied to control limb prosthetic devices [27], [28], and such BCI controlled prostheses indicate a feasible neurological rehabilitation technology for motor function recovery. Jackson et al [29] introduced an implanted BCI system for upper extremity stimulation which was evaluated in monkeys.…”
