An educational software to reinforce the comprehensive learning of materials selection

Abstract: An educational software, called CalSev 1.0.2, has been developed for supporting the teaching in materials selection seminars. As a case study, a selection of materials for nuclear reactor pressure vessels has been chosen, because it is a representative example of the relationship between chemical composition, mechanical properties, and in-service behavior. This software has been developed to improve the students' understanding of the materials selection tasks, providing an interactive user-friendly platform th… Show more

“…As is demonstrated in several previous works consulted [18,22] and by the results obtained in the subject computer‐aided manufacturing (shown in the Figure ), it is definitively necessary to continue implementing new CAM and CAE tools and a series of new practical activities that can be properly integrated in the obligatory subjects in the Area, in a transversal manner, to improve training in the professional skills of future mechanical engineers.…”

“…This type of surveys, used in other previous works [1,18], has provided a valuable information allowing to assess the viability of the integration of new CAM/CAE tools for competency‐based learning in manufacturing engineering . Further, the good results obtained in the individual evaluations of the practical activity solved by the new software tools, PullWorks CAM and Deform CAE, have confirmed the viability of the new proposal.…”

“…This table shows the linear density (mass per length), the minimum thickness to be able to withstand the constraints (note that the composite material thickness is restricted by the manufacturing process: automated filament winding), RF, maximum deformation and cost (only the bulk material and the manufacturing expenses are considered). WWER 15Kh2MFAA steel has been selected to compare with the composite material according to Rodríguez-Prieto et al., 11,27,28 who selected it as one of the most promising for nuclear applications. Figures 7–9 show the comparison information obtained by simulation in a graphic way.…”

“…A virtual engine laboratory application for use in automotive engineering education has been proposed to allow the practical teaching of powertrain calibration , and a virtual geophysical laboratory system (VGLS) has been developed to help users understand and master laboratory equipment and experimental procedures in geophysical education . In addition, the CalSev 1.0.2 educational software has been developed to provide teaching support in materials selection seminars , while a virtual electrophysics laboratory has been designed to simulate vacuum systems, powerful pulse technology, accelerator electronic systems, and channels transporting high‐energy particles . Simulation has also been found to increase student learning, intrinsic motivation, and self‐efficacy regarding core competencies in the field of medical genetics .…”
