The main objective of the present review is to evaluate the knowledge and attitudes of physical education (PE) teachers concerning dental trauma first-aid through a systematic appraisal of the literature, meta-analysis and meta-regressions. The entire content of PubMed and ISI/Web of Science was mined. Eligibility criteria for selecting studies were studies evaluating dental trauma first-aid knowledge and/or attitudes and/or the effectiveness of mouthguards use by PE teachers. Articles written in any language and published or accepted by peer-reviewed journals were considered. Methodological quality was assessed using an adapted version of the Downs and Black instrument. Of 15 selected articles, three were of strong quality, three were moderate, and the remaining nine were rated as weak. The majority of studies showed that PE teachers had an inadequate knowledge of the initial management of dental trauma. Specifically, there was a lack of knowledge concerning an appropriate washing and transporting medium and the extra-alveolar period of an avulsed tooth. Due to the inadequate knowledge of PE teachers regarding dental trauma management, specific education should be added to PE classes to improve the emergency treatment of dental injuries.

Objective:The prognosis of replantation of an avulsed tooth is affected by the first aid management in the first 15 minutes after traumatic incident. Knowledge of the optimal management is crucial to successful replantation. The aim of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of educational intervention using the Arabic poster prize in improving the knowledge of primary schoolchildren about firstaid management of avulsion.Methods: An interventional educational study was undertaken. A total of 550 schoolchildren aged 9-12 years participated in this study. Thirteen public primary schools in Damascus city were chosen. A questionnaire was developed to measure the knowledge of schoolchildren about avulsion management. The translated IADT education poster about avulsion management was adopted .The content of this poster was explained to the children. Two months later, the subjects were re-evaluated using the same questionnaire. Paired sample t-test was used to compare the improvement of knowledge before and after.Result:A total of 537 schoolchildren completed the questionnaires in which (N=305(57% were females and (N=232) 43% were males. The findings demonstrated significant improvement in the participants’ responses after 8 weeks(P<0.05). The mean score of knowledge increased significantly from 3.71 in baseline to 4.03 after 8 weeks(P<0.003). Conclusion: The educational intervention showed significant improvement intheirknowledge of children about avulsion after education.This interventional method can be suggested as a practical valuable tool that can be generalized to cover all children in Syrian society in the hope to prevent negative consequences of avulsion.

Objetivo: descrever uma revisão da literatura que apresente as principais consequências que podem ocorrer quando o dente avulsionado é reimplantado de forma tardia, proporcionando um prognóstico desfavorável. Revisão de literatura: a avulsão dental é uma lesão traumática que se caracteriza pelo completo deslocamento do dente de seu alvéolo, acarretando danos tanto às estruturas de suporte do elemento dental quanto às estruturas pulpares. A permanência extraoral do elemento dental avulsionado por períodos longos ou em meios de armazenamento inadequados pode provocar danos adicionais. Considerações finais: as lesões de inserções são as principais consequências da pós-avulsão dentária, isso devido a uma ruptura do ligamento periodontal, com uma secagem excessiva antes do reimplante, danificando as células do ligamento periodontal, o que, por sua vez, provoca uma resposta inflamatória exacerbada em uma ampla área da superfície radicular.Palavras-chaves: Avulsão dentária. IntroduçãoO traumatismo dentário apresenta-se como um problema de saúde pública comumente encontrado entre crianças e adolescentes, sendo que a avulsão dental compreende 16% desses traumas 1 . Isso gera um elevado impacto psicossocial, com necessidade de tratamentos de alto custo, já que, aos gastos iniciais do atendimento emergencial, somam-se aqueles de controle pós-tratamento, que pode se estender por vários anos após o trauma. Entre as principais causas, podemos citar os acidentes automobilísticos, os esportes de contato e a violência urbana 2 .O reimplante de dentes tem sido considerado como uma medida temporária, já que muitos dentes não resistem à reabsorção radicular que ocorre a partir da reabsorção superficial do cemento, podendo levar ao reparo ou à reabsorção por substituição, que resultará em anquilose progressiva 3 . A necrose isquêmica da polpa também pode ocorrer, seguida de regeneração ou degeneração pulpar 4 .Reabsorção inflamatória, reabsorção por substituição e esfoliação do dente são complicações potenciais quando dentes avulsionados são reimplantados; na maioria dos casos, é possível que o dente acometido apresente necrose pulpar, em função do rompimento do feixe vásculo-nervoso 5 .
