Sandy beaches are being threatened by a changing climate. However, the effects of this changing environment, including warming, on these ecosystems, have hitherto been tentative and qualitative. Using concurrent long-term (1984−2007) observations on abundance and individual size, together with laboratory examinations of body abnormalities (morphological anomalies and epibionts), we provide evidence that the sandy beach yellow clam Mesodesma mactroides of the Uruguayan coast has responded to climate change. Regional sea surface temperature anomalies (SSTA) showed an increasing trend through time, with positive values after 1997. The position of the warm water front (20°C isotherm), a proxy of tropical waters, showed a long-term poleward shift rate of ca. 9 km yr −1. Clam abundance (total and discriminated by population component) decreased through time and was inversely related to variations in SSTA, with higher abundance during cold periods. Length frequency distributions (LFDs) showed polymodal size structures with fully represented clam population components in cool years. By contrast, LFDs showed fewer size classes and larger clams were virtually absent during warm years. Prevalence of body abnormalities in M. mactroides increased through time and was positively correlated with increasing SSTA, suggesting a link with climate stress. The population dynamics of M. mactroides seems to be driven by climatic forcing, mostly related with warming. Our results demonstrate the implications of climate change in the structure of sandy beach fauna, which could be particularly relevant in ectotherms with cold water affinities. Thus, climate change should be given a high priority in sandy beach conservation planning and management.

The systematic dwindling over time of many commercially important fish stocks in developed countries and the increasing demand of international markets provided a window of opportunity for fishery sector development in many developing countries. Science-based assessments of how market forces impact on fisheries trends are particularly limited in developing countries. This study assessed long-term trends (1960-2013) of the Uruguayan industrial fishery sector, including: (i) landings discriminated by species and resource type; (ii) variations in nominal effort and fleet capacity; (iii) bioeconomic patterns for most important species; and (iv) export and import volumes at the Uruguayan seafood market. Results indicate the sector underwent four phases that depict long-term patterns: development, expansion, stabilization-diversification and declining yields and market contraction. The development of the sector was mainly due to the Argentine hake fishery, which was characterized by a sustained increase in landings, nominal effort and fleet capacity

Bivalve mollusks are important aquaculture and fisheries resources. On the Atlantic coast of Uruguay, the yellow clam Mesodesma mactroides has been traditionally exploited by hand. In recent years, its consumption has been notoriously valued, becoming a gastronomic product for regional restaurants. To obtain a quality product, a process of sand purification is carried out, keeping the clams in seawater tanks for short periods. However, there is no knowledge about the effects of this process or an analysis of the optimal conditions of purification. The goal of this paper was to experimentally evaluate several techniques that allow keeping M. mactroides state under laboratory conditions. Survival tests were performed to evaluate labeling, diets, types of artificial marine water (AMW), anatomical position of the organisms in captivity and substrate. The results showed that survival was not affected by the marking method and the legibility of the labels was not altered. Dry Spirulina was adequate as an alternative diet. The AMW of simpler composition and lower cost significantly increased survival after the first week of experimentation. Keeping individuals upright significantly increased survival compared to a horizontal position. These results have immediate applicability, contributing in the medium term to the development of the species in captivity.
