An Economic Approach to Size of a Renewable Energy Mix in Small Islands

Abstract: The importance of renewable energy exploitation reduces the energy dependence on fossil fuels. Despite technological progress, in several remote areas and small islands the energy production is nowadays dominated by the utilization of fossil fuels. With new, increasingly stringent laws on polluting emissions and the need to lower production costs, it is necessary to exploit as many renewable sources as possible. In order to implement these considerations, it was decided to study renewable energy production. Th… Show more

“…In this paper, based on HOMER software, the cleanliness performance of the gridconnected PV-storage microgrid was evaluated in terms of two indicators: renewable energy share and carbon dioxide emission. The percentage of non-renewable energy is calculated as shown in Equation ( 9), and the percentage of renewable energy is calculated as shown in Equation (10) [30].…”

“…This transition to renewable energy can also create new job opportunities and stimulate economic growth in coastal communities [14]. Furthermore, the development of marine renewable energy can help diversify the energy mix, increasing resilience and reducing vulnerability to supply disruptions [15]. It is notable for its advantageous characteristics, including its ability to generate energy for 24 h and its water density, which is approximately 900 times greater than air density [16].…”
