An Economic and Environmental Study of a Hybrid System (Wind and Diesel) in the Algerian Desert Region using HOMER Software

Abstract: This paper presents a new of economic and environmental study of a hybrid system (wind turbine and diesel generator) in Algerian desert regions using HOMER software. The principal interests of the hybrid system are clean production at the place of consumption, the combined use of resources, energy storage, and supply security. Using an experimental device outfitted with Homer software, models were developed and successfully compared to reality. The obtained results confirm that the proposed system proved to be… Show more

“…HOMER is an optimization and simulation software package that is mainly used for the study of multi-source energy production (PV, wind, storage, diesel, etc.) [5], and runs hundreds or thousands of hourly simulations repeatedly, to design the optimum system for the best possible alignment between energy supply and demand [20].…”

“…Algeria's current vision of energy policy is based on a strategy focused on developing inexhaustible resources such as solar power, and using them to diversify energy sources and prepare for the Algeria of tomorrow. Indeed, the country stands out for its relative size, wealth, location, and enormous renewable energy potential, especially when it comes to solar energy [5]. The main problem to which is confronted with the use of renewable energy sources they cannot provide energy continuously to the load due to seasonal and daily weather conditions and stochastic nature, whereas necessary hybrid systems that improve the reliability of the global system all use a combination of several sources of energy such as a system emergency controllable DG and/or an energy storage system (ESS) to reduce dependence on a single energy source [6].…”
