An Eco‐Friendly Nitrogen Source for the Preparation of Vanadium Nitride/Nitrogen‐Doped Carbon Nanocomposites for Supercapacitors

Abstract: It is highly urgent to find an eco‐friendly nitrogen source for the preparation of metal nitrides as an electrode material for supercapacitors (SCs). Herein, vanadium nitride/N‐doped carbon (VN/NC) nanocomposites were prepared from the nitrogen source of g‐C3N4 by a facile one‐step annealing process. VN NPs, with an average particle size of 7 nm, make an important contribution to the capacitance of the composites. N‐doped carbon (NC), with an advanced sheet‐like structure and high nitrogen content provides a l… Show more

“…Since Kumta’s work on vanadium nitride (VN) nanostructure [ 1 , 2 ], VN has extensively been used as anode material for supercapacitors (SCs) [ 3 , 4 , 5 ]. This is due to its large theoretical capacitance [ 6 , 7 ], suitable working negative potential window [ 8 , 9 , 10 ], excellent electrical conductivity [ 10 ] as well as pseudocapacitive properties [ 11 ]. Considering the electrochemical instability of VN in aqueous solution [ 12 , 13 ], the pseudocapacitance charge storage of VN that varies in different aqueous electrolytes (such as KOH and LiCl) also remains a bottleneck [ 14 , 15 , 16 ].…”

“…37 Furthermore, the construction of ultrathin amorphous metal oxide nanosheets using a lamellar Cu 2 Ooleate complex as a two-dimensional confining template has been demonstrated. 38 Furthermore, composites such as Ni/ CeO 2 , 39 Mo 2 C-carbon, 40 VN/nitrogen-doped carbon, 41 and single-atom Fe/nitrogen-rich carbon 42 were also fabricated using carbon nitride as a template. However, studies have not progressed on the use of carbon nitride to control the nanocomposite structure in CuO and SiO 2 , which have elemental abundance, low toxicity, and high thermal and chemical stability.…”

“…For example, Xing et al fabricated vanadium nitride/nitrogen-doped carbon composite materials by utilizing C 3 N 4 as eco-friendly nitrogen source and applied the materials for supercapacitors, which exhibited favorable specific capacitance and cycling stability. 26 According to the previous reports, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) can insert into the carbon nanosheets to fabricate a 3D porous structure. The inserted CNT could effectively inhibit the aggregation of carbon nanosheets and further enhance conductivity.…”
