An automated image-collection system for crystallization experiments using SBS standard microplates

Abstract: As part of a structural genomics platform in a university laboratory, a low-cost in-house-developed automated imaging system for SBS microplate experiments has been designed and constructed. The imaging system can scan a microplate in 2-6 min for a 96-well plate depending on the plate layout and scanning options. A web-based crystallization database system has been developed, enabling users to follow their crystallization experiments from a web browser. As the system has been designed and built by students and… Show more

“…Most video collection products are thin client mode, that is, video capture terminal only carry out image collection and simple image coding and then sends image data to PC for processing [13] [14]. For application of human driving skill models in this mode, image should be captured and be sent to PC for processing, and then the processing results should be sent to controller of the automatic driving system, all these should be done in real time.…”

“…For most academic laboratories, however, systems of this type are prohibitively expensive. A system for screening for protein crystals was described in 2007 (Brostromer et al, 2007), but this required some specially fabricated parts and there was insufficient detail for users to build their own copy of the device. In recent years, the cost of 3D printers and computer numerical control (CNC) machines has decreased significantly.…”
