An atypical rotavirus detected in a child with gastroenteritis in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Abstract: Particles morphologically identical to rotaviruses were found in the faeces of a nine week-old child with gastroenteritis. Analysis of the viral RNA genome by polyacrylamine gel electrophoresis revealed 10 bands (probably 11 segments) some of wich differed in migration rate from those of the great majority of rotaviruses infecting man and other animal hosts. The virus was not detected by a highly sensitive enzyme immunoassay (ELISA) and therefore probably lacked the crossreactive antigen(s) shared by the major… Show more

“…The positive results were confirmed by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, as previously described by Pereira et al (1983), using a 20% faecal suspension in phosphate buffered saline (pH 7.4). The positive RVA samples were genotyped by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (PCR) followed by Multiplex nested-PCR using the primers described by Gentsch et al (1992), Gouvea et al (1994) and Das et al (1994).…”

“…No Brasil, os dados pioneiros nesse contexto cabem a Pereira et al (1983b), que descreveram a infecção por rotavírus do grupo C em criança portadora de quadro diarréico agudo na cidade do Rio de Janeiro. Estudos subseqüentes levados a efeito nas regiões norte, centro-oeste e sudeste bem denotaram a amplitude quanto à ocorrência desse patógeno no Brasil.…”

“…Group C rotaviruses have been encountered in practically all parts of the world [1,7,8,12,13,15,23,25,27]. In general, when PAGE has been used for the analysis, the frequency of group C rotaviruses has been about 1/200-1/300 of the identified rotavirus strains [5].…”
