In academia, different disciplines tend to represent themselves, their writers, and their readers in unique ways. To be able to probe into such crossdisciplinary discursive variations, the present cross-disciplinary study used Martin and White's appraisal framework incorporating lexico-grammar and language evaluation strategies to explore the linguistic construal of evaluative stance in the conclusion section of academic research articles. To this end, a corpus of 160 research articles randomly selected from English international journals of psychology as a representative of soft sciences and industrial engineering as a representative of hard sciences were examined in the light of Martin and White's scheme, with a focus on graduation. To code the data, UAM Corpus Tool was used for the ease of descriptive analyses. In general, the findings indicated that the number of graduation words and graduation types were significantly higher in the hard science corpus compared to the soft science one, suggesting that the authors of hard science articles mainly attempted to express their appreciation and judgment and report the fluctuation of a specific feature in their findings.

This article discusses the media's perspective related to incest rape case in Jambi written by the editorial board and posted in The Jakarta Post's opinion column. The aim of this paper is finding out the media's evaluation toward the case using an appraisal system. The analysis is done by classifying which utterance in the data that consists of several arguments and opinions. Later on, the researchers highlight and discuss expressions which represent the media's evaluation of the government, the family member of the victim, and the whole society and state relating to the case. The result of the analysis presents that the media put their negative evaluation toward the hearing decision and sentence addressed to the victim, especially negative evaluation of judgment and appreciation. Those negative evaluations are deemed as a form of defense from media instead of a neutral commentary.

Appraisal Theory by Martin and White (2005) has increasingly claimed its potential in discourse analysis studies, highlighting the speakers’ and writers’ evaluations of people, entities, and events. This paper adopts Martin and White’s Appraisal framework for the purpose of determining the Affect in the expressives made by the judges of the two reality shows, The Voice UK versus The Voice Vietnam. Specifically, the research addresses itself to discovering which Affect resources are used in the expressive acts by the judges and indicating the resemblances and discrepancies in employing those resources in the expressives by the two groups of judges. The results reveal that all of the sub-types of Affect were found in the two data sets. Besides, the Affect resources in the two languages share a variety of similarities in terms of their frequency, realization strategies, and polarities. The study can be the reference for learners of English and Vietnamese in passing their remarks in daily communication.
