An assessment of the levels of phthalate esters and metals in the Muledane open dump, Thohoyandou, Limpopo Province, South Africa

Abstract: Background: This work reports the determination of the levels of phthalate esters (dimethyl phthalate (DMP), diethyl phthalate (DEP), dibutyl phthalate (DBP), diethyl hexyl phthalate (DEHP)) and metals (lead, cadmium, manganese, zinc, iron, calcium) in composite soil samples. The soil samples were collected randomly within the Muledane open dump, Thohoyandou, Limpopo province, South Africa. Control samples were collected about 200 m away from the open dump. The phthalate esters were separated and determined by… Show more

“…These were found present at monthly mean concentrations of between 24 and 139 mg/L in the lagoon and 10 and 80 mg/L in the receiving stream. Adeniyi et al (2008) looked at concentrations of phthalates in soils surrounding an open solid waste dump in Limpopo Province, South Africa. For the phthalate esters dimethyl phthalate (DMP), diethyl phthalate (DEP), dibutyl phthalate (DBP) and DEHP, the mean values calculated were 0.31 ± 0.12, 0.21 ± 0.05, 0.30 ± 0.07, and 0.03 ± 0.01 mg/kg respectively.…”

“…The instrument's setting and operational conditions were done in accor- dance with the manufacturers' specifications. The instrument was calibrated with analytical grade metal standard stock solutions (1,000 mg dm −3 ) in replicate (Adeniyi et al 2008). Five grams of predigested soil samples were spiked with metal standards in triplicate for metal recovery studies as reported earlier (Awofolu 2005;Adeniyi et al 2005).…”

“…Of these groups of chemicals are Phthalates or phthalic acid esters (PAEs). They are diakyl or alkyl esters of 1,2 benzene carboxylic acid (Luks-Betlej et al, 2001;Alatriste-Mondragon et al, 2003;Adeniyi et al, 2008). They are formed when methanol, ethanol or other alcohols react with the carboxyl groups on the benzene ring of phthalic acids.…”
