An assessment of mass production and nutrient composition of Black Soldier Fly Maggot on different agriculture by-product to fermented growth media

Abstract: Black Soldier Fly (BSF) maggot is an eco-friendly alternative for animal feedstuff and its growth and development is impacted by a substrate nutrient. Therefore, this study aims to determine the production and nutrient composition of BSF (Hermetia illucens) maggots using different fermented growth media from agriculture by-products. The study adopted a completely randomized design (CRD) consisting of 5 treatments with 4 replications. The treatments include P0 = 100% Fermented Rice Bran, P1 = 50% each of Fermen… Show more

“…The average weight of the prepupae in this experiment was lower than the average weight of the larvae on Day 11, which is similar to the result obtained by Cheng et al [ 26 ] and Kim et al [ 32 ], because the prepupae ceased feeding and began to eliminate the remaining food from their digestive systems in preparation to pupate. In this stage, the prepupae use the reserve fats in their body to generate energy since movements and metamorphosis require energy, as reported by Mirwandhono et al [ 33 ].…”

“…It was a joint community-based activity for properly processing organic waste by minimizing the obstacles faced using other methods. One of them is the accumulation of unused organic fertilizer from composting because of its lower economic value [1][2][3]. Another weakness of organic waste composting is that it requires a long-time and a large area for the process.…”

“…The utilization of organic waste is continued through bioconversion using BSF larvae to become maggots with a nutritional composition close to the main ingredient for fish and poultry feed [3,4]. One of the nutrients is protein.…”
