The paper highlights survey on lowincome settlements in the core area of Akure, the capital of Ondo State, Nigeria and examined the socioeconomic characteristics of the respondent and the physical state of the building they occupy. It gathers field data with a structured questionnaire administered among residents of low income neighbourhoods of Akure using random sampling technique. The data were analysed using simple frequency and percentage distribution tables. The study showed that most of the residents are engaged in the informal sector of the economy (self employed), their income level is very low and that household size is very high .The survey carried out on housing revealed that most dwellings were constructed before 1960 and are of monolithic type. They are lacking in essential infrastructures and a large number (53.3%) are unsatisfactory by modern standards. While we are aware of the fact that findings of a study of this type may be more typical of the case than more general to other cities, there is every reason to believe that the issues involved are more national than local. The policy recommendations have therefore been geared to reflect this observation.

Housing is a fundamental human need, until now, making sure that every person has access to good quality housing is a grave challenge facing Bamenda Urban Space. This paper seeks to examine the housing situation and challenges to housing development in Bamenda Urban Space. The study adopted the mix method approach which involves triangulation of quantitative and qualitative methods of data collection. Primary data were obtained from field observations, interviews and questionnaires administered to households. Secondary data were obtained from relevant official documents, published and unpublished sources. Satellite imageries and ArcGIS were used to describe the pattern of growth in built-up areas between 1986 and 2019. Data from questionnaire was entered using Epi Data Version 3.1, analysed using the Statistical Package for Social Science Standard version 21.0 and presented in the form of tables, figures, plates and maps. Findings on housing situation revealed that, although the housing structures has improved, the housing designs, technology and level of maintenance are still low. The irregularity and unreliability in water supply, electricity supply and waste management systems have turned most households to alternative sources with poor quality. Urbanisation and urban growth are occurring without a concurrent increase in housing supply resulting to congestion, deterioration of basic services, pollution, inaccessibility, social vices, lack of privacy, poor ventilation and natural disasters amongst others. The paper, therefore, calls for the rehabilitation and renovation of dilapidated housing structures, provision of basic services, construction of low-cost housing, encourage financial institutions to grant loans to real estate developers at low interest rate.

Kampung Pelangi is a settlement that was beautified through painting so that it became a tourist village in the city of Semarang, however, it still seemed slum. This causes the settlements to be unfit for the community. Therefore, it is necessary to improve the quality of settlements to alleviate slums and support tourism. This study aims to examine the improvement of the quality of settlements carried out in Kampung Pelangi in its tourism development. The method of analysis uses a quantitative approach with quantitative and qualitative descriptive analysis techniques. The results showed that the settlement quality improvement activities carried out were home improvement and settlement infrastructure. The most significant improvements experienced were changes to the roof of the house and road infrastructure. In this improvement, the socio-economic characteristics of the community have a relationship with the quality improvement activities of the settlements carried out to support Kampung Pelangi tourism. The weakest relationship was found in public education on home improvement activities with a chi-square value of 0.046 and a contingent value of 0.303 coefficient. The condition of this house needs to be further improved in terms of improving house occupancy through developing community capacity to support tourism objects in Kampung Pelangi. In the improvement of settlement infrastructure, the relationship formed was strong enough on the status of the community's house on environmental maintenance activities in Kampung Pelangi with a chi-square value of 0.028 and a coefficient of coefficient of 0.403. Community capacity building needs to be improved in terms of awareness of owning a home privately so that it can play a role in improving infrastructure to support tourism facilities and accessibility. Through the development of this capacity, it will cause the community to play a role in maintaining the quality of their housing and infrastructure. Improving the quality of settlements was developed to support Kampung Pelangi tourism in order to improve the quality of tourism objects, make it easier for tourists to visit, and can increase people's income through tourism activities.
