An assessment of heavy metal contamination in the marine soil/sediment of Coles Bay Area, Svalbard, and Greater Bay Area, China: a baseline survey from a rapidly developing bay

Abstract: The objective of this research is to investigate the pollution levels of tin (Sn), arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), copper (Cu), lead (Pb), mercury (Hg), and zinc (Zn) of soil/sediment taken in Coles Bay Area (CBA), Svalbard, and Great Bay Area (GBA), China, in an attempt to evaluate the pollution potential related to recent development in the areas. A total of 150 soil/sediment samples were collected in each location. Heavy metal concentrations were detectable levels at all sites and the values of Cd of all soil/s… Show more

“…Therefore, heavy metal pollution in sediments is an important environmental quality indicator, indicating pollution status and guiding ecological risk assessment ( Wang et al, 2018 ). Scholars have also evaluated and assessed heavy metal pollution in various sea areas based on this ( Jeong et al, 2021 ; Leung et al, 2021 ; Liu et al, 2021 ). marine pollution & organochlorine pesticide (OCP) …”

“…Survey of various heavy metal–polluted sites and collection of metal-polluted bulk soils, rhizosphere soils of plants growing on metal-contaminated sites, and polluted water body samples was performed in Nagpur and Bhopal, India, as per the procedures mentioned by Leung et al (2021) following the United State Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) methods ( Supplementary Table 1 ). Samples were collected in sterilized tight screw cap tubes and polyethylene bags, transported in an icebox, and stored in the laboratory at 4°C to avoid further oxidation/contamination.…”

“…The bioaccumulation and toxicity of heavy metals (HMs) adversely affect human health and the surrounding environment. Various sources such as the breakdown of rocks containing heavy metals, volcanic eruptions, and human activities such as the construction of various industries, expansion of urbanization, and extraction from mines cause an increase in HMs pollution (Hamad et al 2019 ; Zhuo et al 2019 ; Leung et al 2021 ). Lead, as a toxic heavy metal, enters the human body from two sources: dust inhalation and the food chain (Kabata-Pendias 2000 ).…”
