An assessment of composite repair system in offshore platform for corroded circumferential welds in super duplex steel pipe

Abstract: The main aim of this study is to assess the effectiveness of a composite repair system in severely corroded circumferential welds in super duplex stainless steel pipes as a preventive measure against the premature corrosion damage at the welds. Artificial defects were fabricated on the super duplex steel tube in order to reproduce the localized corrosion damage defects found in real welded joints. Three kinds of through thickness defects were considered: 25%, 50% and 96% of the perimeter of the pipe. The perfo… Show more

“…The erosion-corrosion phenomenon occurs in difficult situations where the interaction is a complex field which leads to make a degradation for wall thickness of pipeline steels [19][20][21]. Barros et al [22] have studied the repairing of a real corrosion defect by composite sleeve at welded joints. Moreover, many researchers [23][24][25][26] have studied the circumferential stress in the pipe elbow by analytical models, numerical methods and/or experimental tests.…”

“…This composite repair system can assure that the pipe will not leak until a planned maintenance of the line. Nevertheless, further work is still desirable to improve confidence in the long-term performance of bonded composite [27].…”

“…This issue is an interesting topic for mechanical researchers for a long time, in particular, repair the fractures using safe, fast and economical method. The use of polymerbased composite systems to repair damaged pipes has been widely used in the offshore and onshore units, due to their suitability and cost-effectivness compared to other to other maintenance options [2] . The advantages of composite over metallic repairs or a full replacement of pipe sections included a better corrosion resistance, higher flexibility for the repair of complex structures, no production shut down or hot work and a minimal lead time [3] .…”
