An Asian Perspective on Povidone Iodine in Wound Healing

Abstract: Antiseptics, with a broader spectrum of antimicrobial efficacy, lower risk of antibiotic resistance development, and minimal collateral damage to host tissues, are important alternatives to control the bioburden in wounds. Povidone iodine (PVP-I), in use for several decades, has the broadest spectrum of activity, a persistent antimicrobial effect, an ability to penetrate biofilms, and a lack of acquired or cross-resistance. It demonstrates good skin tolerance and low cytotoxicity. However, some reports on PVP-… Show more

“…Knutson's formula is based on a combination of povidone‐iodine and sugar. The former, through its antiseptic activity, contributes to preserving the area from bacterial infections during the healing process . The latter is known for its anti‐inflammatory and antimicrobial proprieties and its ability to stimulate cell proliferation, collagen synthesis, and neo‐angiogenesis.…”

“…Povidone‐iodine solution has been widely used as an antimicrobial agent since 1956 due to its ability to contrast bacterial growth, particularly by killing Staphylococcus aureus , Mycobacterium Chelonae , Klebsiella pneumoniae , Pseudomonas Cepacia , and Streptococcus mitis . The solution has been used for many decades as a topical agent to treat infected wound dehiscence in the head and neck region …”
