Federated Intelligence for Active Queue Management in Inter-Domain Congestion

Active Queue Management (AQM) has been considered as a paradigm for the complicated network management task of mitigating congestion by controlling buffer of network link queues. However, finding the right parameters for an AQM scheme is very challenging due to the dynamics of the IP networks. In addition, this problem becomes even more complex in inter-domain scenarios where several organizations interconnect each other with the limitation of not sharing raw and private data. As a result, existing AQM schemes have not been widely employed despite their advantages. Therefore, we present a solution that tackles the challenges of tuning the AQM parameters for inter-domain congestion control scenarios where the network management goes beyond an organization's domain. We then introduce the Federated Intelligence for AQM (FIAQM) architecture, which enhances the existing AQM schemes by leveraging the Federated Learning approach. The proposed FIAQM framework is capable of dynamically adjusting the AQM parameters in a multi-domain setting, which is hard to achieve with the conventional AQM solutions working alone. To this end, FIAQM uses an artificial neural network, trained in a federated manner, to predict beyond-own-domain congestion and an intelligent AQM parameter tuner. The evaluation results show that FIAQM can effectively improve the performance of the inter-domain connections by reducing the congestion on their links while preserving the network data private within each participating domain.

The Internet's default inter-domain routing protocol is the Border Gateway Protocol (BGP). With the BGP, dozens of thousands of Autonomous Systems (ASs) exchange network layer reachability information to manage connectivity among them. The BGP was introduced in the early stages of the Internet, and although the BGP is one of the most successful protocols, new desirable features have been difficult to incorporate into the network over the decades. Thus, this paper classifies previous works to evolve the control plane of inter-domain routing into three types of approaches: brand new design; incremental improvement; inter-domain communication. The main goal of this paper is to provide an understanding of what approaches have been taken to evolve the inter-domain routing control plane. This survey also discusses why the control plane's issues are hard to evolve and future perspectives for that topic.

A top concern in Software-Defined Networking (SDN) is the management of network flows. The resource limitation in SDN devices, e.g., Ternary Content Addressable Memory (TCAM) size, and the signaling overhead between the control and data plane elements can impose scalability restrictions for a network. A notable SDN technology is the OpenFlow protocol, and failures in links and nodes inside an OpenFlow network could lead to drawbacks, such as packet loss. This work proposes the Local Node Group fast reroute (LONG), a hybrid resilience mechanism for OpenFlow networks that combines protection and restoration resilience mechanisms. The results achieved indicate that LONG is a practical approach when compared against the state-of-the-art algorithms.
