An Approach To Comparative Simulation Of Road Lighting and Estimation Of Associated Quality Parameters

Abstract: A software-based comparative simulation work was conducted about the luminance-based method of road lighting design with MATLAB and DIALux, giving due consideration to the design standards laid down in CIE140:2019 technical report. The outputs were obtained for a specified set of road lighting conditions in terms of luminaire mounting height, road width, spacing of lighting poles, overhang, and maintenance factor for four different CIE standard road surfaces R1, R2, R3, and R4, six different observer positions… Show more

“…In the designing of indoor environments with daylight integration (for example, historical buildings and public libraries), light shelves are often installed (to redirect sunlight into the interior space) whose upper reflective surfaces are coated with highly reflective film in aluminium alloy (Balocco and Calzolari, 2008) and the daylight transmission level through a clerestory increases with the increment in the optical reflectance of the reflective surface of a light shelf (Bhattacharya et al , 2022). Moreover, it is averred that for road lighting systems, where installation layouts and pavement characteristics profoundly influence the photometric quality parameters and system energy efficiency (Bhattacharya et al , 2021; Bhattacharya et al , 2023), aluminium-coated reflectors of luminaires reduce lumen depreciation and can increase luminaire luminous efficacy (luminous flux emitted by the luminaire per Watt of consumed electric power) (Unlu, 2022). Consequently, it can be avouched that aluminium alloys do find a plethora of energy-efficient applications in different fields ranging from lighting design to production.…”

“…Thus, with an overview of the preceding literature, this work, undertaken in a ward in a tertiary care hospital setting in Eastern India, conducted a study that examined the existing artificial illumination system, created a series of software-based lighting retrofit simulation models with LED luminaires for 16 different room surface reflectance combinations, analyzed the photometric outputs obtained from simulation and organized a survey with a formulated questionnaire involving 48 subjects regarding subjective discernment of the resultant retrofitted lighting conditions emanating from the variations in lamp types and room surface reflectance values. LED luminaires were chosen for this work as LED technology is widely used for both indoor (Sinnadurai et al , 2012; Wang et al , 2017) and outdoor lighting purposes, including vehicular lighting, area lighting, road lighting simulation and analysis (Khan et al , 2015; Bhattacharya et al , 2021; Roy et al , 2022). LED luminaires are more energy-efficient compared to fluorescent light generation technology, highly conducive to different visual tasks, may not adversely affect body rhythm and health (van Bommel, 2011) and are generally considered to be highly suited for indoor lighting applications (Tsuei et al , 2008; Bhattcharjee and Mazumdar, 2016; Amelkina et al , 2018).…”
