An Approach to Artifact Identification: Application to Heart Period Data

Abstract: A rational strategy for the automated detection of artifacts in heart period data is outlined and evaluated. The specific implementation of this approach for heart period data is based on the distribution characteristics of successive heart period differences. Because beat-to-beat differences generated by artifacts are large, relative to normal heart period variability, extreme differences between successive heart periods serve to identify potential artifacts. Critical to this approach are: 1) the derivation o… Show more

“…The current findings pertain to a subsequent and unique phase of the study, designed to investigate the impact of parental attention toward/away from child pain upon parental emotion regulation and pain control behaviour during the child's second performance of the CPT. Participants were recruited from a sample of parents and school children (grades [5][6][7][8][9][10][11] who had consented to be recontacted following participation in a questionnaire study two years earlier (N = 164 child-parent dyads) [see 17]. Exclusion criteria for this study were: (1) child recurrent or chronic pain, (2) developmental delay, and (3) insufficient knowledge of the Dutch language.…”

“…Interbeat interval time series were screened for measurement artifacts [11] and erroneous intervals were substituted by linear interpolations using ARTiiFACT software (Version 2.03; www.artiifact.de) [49]. One time domain parameter (rMSSD) and one frequency domain parameter (HFabs) were calculated via ARTiiFACT.…”

“…Тщательная подготовка паци-ента и обслуживание записывающей аппаратуры являются крайне важными для устранения шума до его возникновения. Для уменьшения количества отклонений в величине интервала R-R лучше всего использовать основанные на распределении алго-ритмы поиска артефактов в помощь к ручному (визуальному) подходу [111][112][113].…”

“…Signal processing specifications for detector algorithms could be manually overwritten, and included inter-beat-interval check and automated Minimum Artifact Deviation and Maximum Expected Deviation (MAD/MED) algorithm (Berntson et al, 1990). For the present study, 5 min analytical epochs and both detector algorithms were applied.…”
