An Approach for Service Function Chain Reconfiguration in Network Function Virtualization Architectures

Abstract: Network function virtualization (NFV) technology continues gaining attention as a paradigm shift, and telecommunication services can be flexibly deployed and managed, resulting in lower CAPEX and OPEX for the Internet service providers (ISPs). Any telecommunication service is represented by a so-called service function chain (SFC), which can be achieved by a set of virtual network functions (VNFs) to be executed on virtual machines (VMs) in a strictly order according to SLAs. The NFV-enabled SFCs applied in th… Show more

“…With respect to the VNF reconfiguration problem, in literature, a number of research works have proposed solving the problem of VNF reconfiguration via an ILP model [8–10, 13, 22, 23]. Eramo et al [9] formulated the energy‐aware reconfiguration of VNFs as an ILP.…”

“…Substantial work within the field of 5G service orchestration is aimed at providing optimal VNF placement algorithms and routing schemes [7,18,1,6]. There is also interesting work looking into scheduling of VNFs [2], and slice chain reconfiguration [16]. In [29] there is work on allocating virtual machines among hosts in an energy-efficient manner [3], which could be adapted and integrated into a VNF placement scheme.…”
