An appraisal of the literature on centric relation. Part III

Abstract: The literature directly and indirectly related to centric relation (CR) has been reviewed chronologically. More than 300 papers and quoted sections of books have been divided into three sections. The first two parts are related to CR. Studies in this group mainly compared, either the position of the mandibular condyle or the mandible itself in different CR recordings. Various tools were discussed for this purpose. The third part of the paper is about CR-centric occlusion (CO) discrepancy. CR still remains one … Show more

“…This strong consistency might be the result of a better subject "deprogramming" procedure prior to the CR record registration. Numerous scientific publications (21,26,32,(33)(34)(35)(36) have pointed out that bimanual mandibular manipulation with anterior deprogrammer is one of the most reliable and reproducible methods of determining CR in dentistry. However, there are also scientific publications that oppose this finding, as the one conducted by Paixão et al (37).…”

“…The limitations of these methods used to examine TMJ anatomy are subject to much controversy and debate in scientific circles, warranting further clarification. 1,2,4 The introduction of cone-beam computerized tomography, a reliable and affordable three-dimensional diagnostic tool, created the possibility of faithfully reproducing any anatomical condition of the craniofacial complex. 11 It is well known that spatial variations in the position of the condyle relative to the mandibular fossa in the RC and MI maxillomandibular positions are mostly very small -on the order of millimeters -and occur in approximately 90% of the entire population.…”
