An Application of Markov Chain Analysis to the Ayrshire Coal Measures Succession

Abstract: SYNOPSISThe vertical ordering of rock types in a Coal Measures succession is analysed in terms of an ' embedded Markov chain ' model. The presence of a statistically significant' memory' within the sequence is proved and a Markov model of combined first and second order properties established. The form of the model is one of loosely repeating basic units (corresponding to cycles) whose internal structure is suggestive of origin in fluvial and floodplain environments and control by local vegetational and sedime… Show more

“…They have been used by a number of investigators (e.g. Potter & Blakey 1968;Gingerinch 1969;Read 1969;Doveton 1971;Miall 1973;Ethier 1975) to validate the presence of ordered and cyclic successions of facies. Stratigraphic "order" may be indicated by repeated patterns of either thickness and/or lithological variation, but it should also be noted that the presence of lithological order alone makes no compelling argument for periodic accumulation (Wilkinson et al 1997).…”

“…The transition probability has long been used by geologists to analyze vertical successions (Vistelius, 1949;Krumbein and Dacey, 1969;Doveton, 1971;Miall, 1973). Figure 5 shows vertical transition probability measurements obtained for hydrofacies data with assumed correlation values of 0.7-1.0.…”

“…It is considered valid to discuss a Markov chain only once a significant dependency on a previous state or states has been proven. Discussions of the limitations and possibilities of Markov chains can be found in Griffiths (1966), Krumbein (1967), Selley (1970), Doveton (1971), Schwarzacher (1969;1972), Miall (1973), Davis (1986), Walker (1979), Powers and Easterling (1982), Turk (1979), andHarper (1984).…”
