An Annotated Species List of Parasites Found in European Smelt Osmerus Eperlanus (L.)

Abstract: This paper offers a summary of the data on parasites of European smelt based on own collections and materials published in journal reviews, scientific papers, conference proceedings and theses. The system of parasitic organisms published in Catalogues of parasites of freshwater fishes of North Asia [Pugachev, 2001[Pugachev, -2004 is used, taking into account new studies on the systematics of infusorians and trematodes. Other groups of parasites are considered within the frameworks of widely used classificatio… Show more

“…The component community of parasites of Coregonus lavaretus in Lake Kamennoye is represented by species typical for oligotrophic water bodies (Anikieva et al, 1983). The helminths found in our study are common across the range of C. lavaretus.…”

“…Like their hosts, these helminths are adapted to the life in oligotrophic water bodies with low temperatures and limited diversi-ty of plankton and benthos. The nematodes R. acus and C. lacustris and the metacercariae of trematodes from the genera Diplostomum and Tylodelphys occur in various hosts from various taxonomic and ecological groups, and are eurythermal and eurybiontic (Anikieva et al, 1983;Pugachev, 2003;Barskaya et al, 2008;Anikieva & Ieshko, 2019).…”

“…In Lake Norsjø, three-spined sticklebacks and European smelt are present (Jensen 1954), which are both intermediate hosts for Dibothriocephalus spp. (Andersen et al 1986;Andersen & Valtonen 1992;Anikieva & Ieshko 2017). D. ditremus also exhibited a higher abundance in male charr, with no apparent relationship between sex and any other variable that could explain the higher occurrence of D. ditremus in males.…”
