An annotated list of the species of Gangesia Woodland, 1924 (Cestoda: Proteocephalidea), parasites of catfishes in Asia, with new synonyms and a key to their identification

Abstract: An annotated list of tapeworms of the genus Gangesia Woodland, 1924 (Cestoda: Proteocephalidea), parasites of siluriform fishes in Asia, is provided. Based on the morphological examination of museum specimens and newly collected material from China, Japan and Russia, as well as the results of a previous revision of the Indomalayan species, only eight of more than 50 nominal taxa are considered to be valid. These are: from India and neighbouring countries, Gangesia bengalensis (Southwell, 1913) (type-species), … Show more

“…Gangesia oligonchis (Gangesiinae) parasitizes in the intestine of the bullhead catfish, Tachysurus fulvidraco (Siluriformes: Bagridae), distributed in Russia (Ash et al ., 2015) and China (Fu et al ., 2019). Thus the mitogenome of G. oligonchis was sequenced and characterized to provide mitogenomic data for future studies on inter-relationships of onchoproteocephalideans.…”

“…This type of study has become a regular component of descriptions of new cestode species (Chervy, 2009). In general, proteocephalidean species have only two main types of microtriches, gladiate spinitriches and filitriches (e.g., Arredondo et al, 2017; Ash et al, 2015; Scholz et al, 2013).…”

“…Similarly, Ash et al . (2011 a , 2011 b ) recognized only 9 of 78 caryophyllidean species described from C. batrachus and H. fossilis , or only 4 of 48 species of proteocephalideans described from W. attu and S. seenghala (Ash et al ., 2012, 2015). A similar situation also occurs in bothriocephalideans, where at least 80 species (57 since 2000) from 7 genera ( Apicobothrium , Circumoncobothrium , Mastalobothrium , Polyonchobothrium , Probothriocephalus , Ptychobothrium and Senga ) have been described very superficially and often in violation of the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature (Ride et al ., 1999) from a single host species, the zig-zag eel Mastacembelus armatus , in India and southeast Asia.…”
