An Annotated List of Auchenorrhyncha and Heteroptera Collected in the Coastal Salt Marshes of the Mississippi Delta in Louisiana

Abstract: Insects that live in the saltwater and brackish marshes, which fringe the northern coast of the Gulf of Mexico, are largely unstudied. During 2011-2013, a survey of insect fauna of the coastal salt marshes of the Mississippi Delta in Louisiana was conducted. We present the species of terrestrial representatives of Heteroptera and Auchenorrhyncha collected during that study. The Auchenorrhyncha are represented by 33 species in 6 families, with Cicadellidae (16 species) and Delphacidae (13 spp.), and are the mos… Show more

“…Re-mobilization of buried oil can cause chronic exposure of saltmarsh organisms, including terrestrial arthropods, which can adversely affect their abundances and community compositions [ 23 , 27 ]. Arthropods have a main role in food webs, which affect ecosystem functions as arthropods inhabit high diversity of micro-habitats and niches [ 10 , 28 ]. The Exxon Valdez oil spill in Prince William Sound had significant long-term negative impacts on the saltmarsh birds, intertidal arthropods and their habitat [ 29 ].…”

“…Terrestrial arthropods were affected by oiling (Bik et al, 2012) and redistribution of oil after hurricanes (Bam et al, 2018) even in regions where plants were unaffected; therefore, arthropods have been suggested to be useful indicators of oil spill impacts on marsh habitats (Pennings et al, 2014). Several insect inventories and biodiversity studies were conducted after the DHOS, mostly at higher taxonomic levels from families to orders (Adams et al, 2017; Aker, 2020; Bam et al, 2018) or consisting of species within a single order (Sokolov et al, 2018).…”

“…The majority of studies focusing on insects within Gulf Coast marshes primarily explore the effects of large-scale disasters such as the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill or hurricanes (Bam et al, 2018;Husseneder et al, 2016Husseneder et al, , 2018McCall & Pennings, 2012). Others either had limited sampling periods (Adams et al, 2017;Bam et al, 2018;McCall & Pennings, 2012), many taxa that were not identified below the ordinal level (Bam et al, 2018;McCall & Pennings, 2012), focused on populations of a single species (Husseneder et al, 2016(Husseneder et al, , 2018, or inventoried species within a single order (Sokolov et al, 2018). Although Sokolov et al (2018) made note of known host plants for selected taxa, no study of Gulf Coast tidal marsh insects has directly explored how the plant texture and underlying salinity gradient affect both the distribution of insects and the ecological roles that they fulfill.…”
