An annotated checklist of the vascular plants of Sundarban Mangrove Forest of Bangladesh

Abstract: The study revealed the occurrence of 528 species of vascular plants belonging to 356 genera and 111 families in the Sundarban Mangrove Forest of Bangladesh. Among these species, 24 were pteridophytes and the rest were angiosperms, of which only 24 were true mangroves and 70 were mangrove associates. Magnoliopsida and Liliopsida were represented by 373 and 131 species, respectively. These species belonged to 345 herbs, 89 shrubs and 94 trees. “…In recent days these species were listed in Chennai, Tamil Nadu; Great Nicobar (Srirama et al 2012). However, they were absent in all regional floristic works of Bangladesh (Rahman & Jamila 2016; Kona & Rahman 2015; Rahman et al 2015; Rahman et al 2014; Rahman 2013; Rahman & Akter 2013; Rahman et al 2013; Uddin & Hassan 2012; Uddin et al 2013; Arefin et al 2011; Uddin & Hassan 2010; Tutul et al 2010; Islam et al 2009; Ahamed et al 2008; Hossain et al 2005; Khan & Huq 2001; Mia & Khan 1995; Datta & Mitra 1953). These facts, ensure that this two species were new to the floral database of Bangladesh.…”

“…Previously, Phyllanthus represented 11 species (5 herbs, 4 shrubs and 2 trees) in Bangladesh (Ahamed et al 2008). Most of the regional literatures of this region ensured a valuable contribution of it to the regional flora (Uddin & Hassan 2010; Islam et al 2009; Rahman et. al.…”

“…In respect to the size of land area, the species composition of the pteridohytes of Rajkandi Reserve Forest seems higher than that of few other protected areas of Bangladesh. For example, 41 fern species were recorded from Rampahar and Sitapahar (Uddin and Hassan, 2012) and 24 species from Sundarbans (Rahman et al, 2016). Two species of pteridophytes occurring in Rajkandi Reserve Forest, viz., Cyathea gigantea, and Tectaria chattagramica, have been enlisted as LR (cd)-(Lower risk, conservation dependent) and DD (Data deficient) respectively in Red Data Book by Khan et al (2001).…”
