An annotated checklist of bryophytes of Europe, Macaronesia and Cyprus

Abstract: Introduction. Following on from work on the European bryophyte Red List, the taxonomically and nomenclaturally updated spreadsheets used for that project have been expanded into a new checklist for the bryophytes of Europe. Methods. A steering group of ten European bryologists was convened, and over the course of a year, the spreadsheets were compared with previous European checklists, and all changes noted. Recent literature was searched extensively. A taxonomic system was agreed, and the advice and expertise… Show more

“…In the past and in the first decade of the present century, Orthotrichum pumilum and O. schimperi were usually treated as a single species (e.g., Corley et al, 1981;Lewinsky-Haapasaari, 1998;Meinunger & Schröder, 2007;Nyholm, 1960;Smith, 2004), although sometimes they were retained as separate species (e.g., Smith, 1978;Szafran, 1961). However, in the past two decades, the distinctness of these two species is increasingly accepted (Cortini Pedrotti & Lara, 2001;Hill et al, 2006;Hodgetts et al, 2020;Lara & Garilleti, 2014;Lara et al, 2009;Ros et al, 2013). Only Hinneri (1976) gave O. schimperi a varietal status, O. pumilum var.…”

“…Identification of bryophytes was carried out according to morphological characteristics using identifiers [ 53 , 54 ], by means of the Micromed-2 microscope and stereomicroscope MBS-10. The nomenclature of bryophytes has been brought in line with the list of bryophytes in Europe, Macaronesia and Cyprus [ 55 ].…”

“…The taxonomic identification was carried out using standard floras [57][58][59][60][61][62][63][64][65], while nomenclature and taxa delimitation followed the checklist of Italian vascular flora [66]. Bryophytes were visually estimated as total coverage (%) and identified at the species level based on standard floras [67][68][69][70], while nomenclature followed the recent checklist of bryophytes of Europe, Macaronesia, and Cyprus [71]. To investigate the plant diversity changes in the burned and control plots, we analyzed species composition in terms of richness and cover.…”
