In this reflective paper we outline and discuss our art-based Patient and Public Involvement (PPI) approach. This exercise held two broad objectives. Firstly, to assist policy makers in understanding the types of interventions communities will find acceptable to address the problem of poor air quality, and secondly, to ascertain community views about our research plans to explore the impact of the planned interventions on neighbourhoods. We reflect on both our approach and the emergent conversations from the PPI activity. Attendees contributed to the process and stressed the importance of not burdening poor neighbourhoods with costly charges as that would ameliorate one health problem but generate others as a consequence of additional financial burden. Equally, they stressed the need to conduct research on matters which they could connect with such as the impact of clean air plans on young children and how information about air pollution is disseminated in their neighbourhoods as and when research findings emerge. This paper offers a conceptual analysis of the art-based PPI method and uniquely draws a connection to the philosophical traditions of Ludwig Wittgenstein. Specifically, we demonstrate how art is conducive to creating a dialogue which is specifically helpful for PPI purposes for both researchers and implementers, and conversely, why traditional conversational approaches may have fallen short of the adequacy mark in this regard.

Introduction: The British Journal of Occupational Therapy ( BJOT) recently introduced a requirement for authors to report Patient and Public Involvement (PPI). The public and people using health and social care services have knowledge which holds value in research beyond use as data. Involvement in research process can help shape the generation of critical evidence informing policies and practices; however, little is known about prior PPI reporting. Method: A scoping review was conducted identifying public involvement in research published in BJOT between 2015 and 2021. An electronic search was conducted using key terms. Data were extracted in duplicate or triplicate using GRIPP2 short form checklist. Results: Twenty-five studies were identified which reported public involvement, this was 6% of research published in BJOT. Patients and public were mainly involved in study steering or advisory groups and their primary activity was developing or piloting study materials. There were low levels of reporting the aim, outcome and critical reflections on involvement activities. Main approaches to involvement were consultation (37%) and collaboration (30%). There was inconsistent use of language and terms. Recommendations: Consistent PPI reporting using Guidance for Reporting Involvement of Patients and the Public (GRIPP 2), critical reflection of impact of PPI, acknowledgement of public contributors, future scoping review investigating impact of BJOT PPI authorship guidelines.

IntroductionBig data research has grown considerably over the last two decades. This presents new ethical challenges around consent, data storage and anonymisation. Big data research projects require public support to succeed and it has been argued that one way to achieve this is through public involvement and engagement. To better understand the role public involvement and engagement can play in big data research, we will review the current literature. This protocol describes the planned review methods.Methods and analysisOur review will be conducted in two stages. In the first stage, we will conduct a scoping review using Arksey and O’Malley methodology to comprehensively map current evidence on public involvement and engagement in big data research. Databases (CINAHL, Health Research Premium Collection, PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science) and grey literature will be searched for eligible papers. We provide a narrative description of the results based on a thematic analysis. In the second stage, out of papers found in the scoping review which discuss involvement and engagement strategies, we will conduct a systematic review following Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines, exploring the delivery and effectiveness of these strategies. We will conduct a qualitative synthesis. Relevant results from the quantitative studies will be extracted and placed under qualitative themes. Individual studies will be appraised through Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool (MMAT), we will then assess the overall confidence in each finding through Confidence in the Evidence from Reviews of Qualitative research (GRADE-CERQual). Results will be reported in a thematic and narrative way.Ethics and disseminationThis protocol sets out how the review will be conducted to ensure rigour and transparency. Public advisors were involved in its development. Ethics approval is not required. Review findings will be presented at conferences and published in peer-reviewed journals.
