An angle sensor based on a sector ring patch antenna for bolt loosening detection

Abstract: This paper presents an angle sensor based on a sector ring patch antenna (SRPA) for loose bolt detection. The sensor is comprised of two parts, a ring substrate sandwiched between a ground plane and a sector ring radiation patch, and a sector ring substrate covered by a radiation patch. The two radiation patches are partially overlapped and the overlapped areas are in contact allowing the electric current to flow within the combined radiation patch. The resonant cavity theory is adopted to explain the relation… Show more

“…In addition, the ameliorative intelligent wrench is also equipped with an especially designed socket. A piezoelectric ceramic (PZT) patch is coupled to a normal socket to transmit and receive ultrasonic signals [22][23][24]. There is no need to permanently bond the sensor on the surface of each bolt head, which greatly improves the efficiency and application scope, and decreases cost.…”

“…Compared with the method based on clamping force monitoring, there are few reports on the bolt loosening angle measurement-based method. At present, the measurement of bolt loosening angle mainly includes radio waves processing-based methods [24][25][26] and vision-based methods [27][28][29][30]. By installing a radio frequency identification (RFID) tag or sector ring patch antenna (SRPA) on bolted joint structure, the radio waves processing-based method can measure the change of bolt angle.…”

“…However, the RFID-based method needs to design a complex structure to realize the switchlike mechanisms of the RFID tag and reader which limits the method can only measure bolt loosening angle changes of more than 20 • [24]. A minimal bolt loosening angle of 1/6 • can be detected by SRPA-based method [26], but the sensitivity easy to be affected by environment and installation and processing of the sensor. Due to its convenience of implementation, the vision-based bolt loosening detection method is favored by more and more researchers in recent years.…”
