An anatomical investigation of the carotid canal

Abstract: Background:The carotid canal (CC) (viz. postero-lateral, lateral and diagonal, and lateral). Conclusions: The present study corroborated previous reports on the CC; however, the tear-drop shaped external CC opening was a unique finding. The knowledge of the reference measurements pertaining to the CC and its relationship to adjacent structures may postulate a suitable surgical "safe-zone" range within the CC area. “…The mean width and AP diameter were 0.752 and 0.541 cm, respectively. 9 In our study, teardrop-shaped CCs were the least common, but round CCs were seen more often in our study than in the study by Naidoo et al. This may be because of racial differences, as they studied African and Caucasian skulls, and we conducted our study on Indian people.…”

“…These foramina are home to multiple important structures responsible for blood supply and facial sensation. The carotid canal is located around 10 mm from the foramen ovale and contains the internal carotid artery, which is responsible for anterior intracranial blood circulation [10 , 1 , 15 , 8] . Intracranial penetrating trauma to the internal carotid artery is a rare complication; however, extracranial trauma to the internal carotid artery occurs in approximately 5%-6% of penetrating neck trauma.…”

“…Posterolateral to the foramen ovale is the foramen spinosum, which contains the middle meningeal artery that supplies the posterior dura mater [1] . Posteromedial to the foramen ovale is the carotid canal, which contains the internal carotid artery, sympathetic nerve plexus, and internal carotid venous plexus [8] . Here we describe the case of an orthodontic wire traversing the left foramen ovale with termination in the inferior left temporal lobe.…”

“…Se introduce en la base del cráneo a través del conducto carotídeo, situado anteriormente al foramen yugular, que comunica el cuello con la cavidad craneal. En este trayecto, la ACI se acompaña de los plexos venosos y simpáticos pericarotídeos (83).…”
