An Analytical Study and Anti-Inflammatory and Analgesic Effects ofHarpagophytum procumbensandHarpagophytum zeyheri

Abstract: The iridoids of Harpagophytum procumbens and Harpagophytum zeyheri were studied by CLHP. Harpagoside is the main iridoid for both drugs whereas 8-p-coumaroylharpagide is a representative iridoid of Harpagophytum zeyheri only. The ratio harpagoside/8-p-coumaroylharpagide can be used to distinguish chemically both species. For commercial dried aqueous extracts this ratio is intermediate because they are probably prepared from a mixture of H. procumbens and H. zeyheri drugs. The aqueous extracts of both drugs sho… Show more

“…It is interesting to note that Vitex cymosa is used in the Brazilian traditional medicine to treat rheumatoid arthritis. Also noteworthy, is the fact that one of the most prescribed phytomedicines to treat degenerative diseases of the musculoskeletal system nowadays is the South African plant Harpagophytum procumbens D.C., known as Devil's Claw, which active principles are claimed to be iridoid glucosides (Stewart & Cole, 2005;Baghdikian et al, 1997).…”

“…Since harpagoside and other iridoid glucosides of Scrophularia spp. have shown anti-inflammatory, 30,31) antihepatotoxic and immunostimulant 32) properties, in vitro propagated plants of S. yoshimurae, which contain fairly high amount of harpagoside, could be used for pharmacological studies. These findings may also be useful in rapid micropropagation, commercial cultivation and germplasm conservation of S. yoshimurae.…”

“…This perennial herbaceous plant, popularly known as "devil's claw", grows naturally in the Kalahari desert and in the steppe region of Namibia in southwestern Africa. Its secondary tubular roots, commonly associated with the term "devil's claw" by its shape, have been widely used in traditional medicine with several therapeutic indications, especially as antiinflammatory and analgesic (Baghdikian et al, 1997).…”

Thus, in Brazil, the dry extract produced from the roots of the H. procumbens DC.…”
